Inspections & Testing
CONSTRUCTION INSPECTION & HOME PERFORMANCE TESTING
It’s not enough to simply assume a home will be built to a specified set of energy-efficiency standards. The construction process must be monitored and inspected, and followed up by actual performance testing and verification once the job is completed. Gulf Power EarthCents Homes must undergo an extensive inspection and testing process that ultimately grades the home in accordance with the nationally recognized Home Energy Rating System (HERS). Each EarthCents Home will be given a HERS Index Score, which is your assurance that the home was not only built according to a strict set of energy-efficiency specifications — it has also been performance tested to ensure those construction specifications were actually met. All HERS-related inspections and performance tests will be conducted in accordance with protocols established and maintained by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET).
Inspection:
- Prior to construction, Gulf Power personnel or other appropriate providers will review the plans and provide climate-specific HVAC "right-sizing" calculations in accordance with accepted industry procedures
- During construction, Gulf Power personnel will conduct on-site inspections to ensure that all energy-related construction components and materials are consistent with EarthCents guidelines
- During construction, independent HERS inspectors will conduct on-site inspections to ensure that all energy-related sub-contractor work is consistent with EarthCents guidelines, and in accordance with the ENERGY STAR "Thermal Bypass Checklist"
Testing:
- Once completed, HERS inspectors will test the home's air-tightness using a "Blower Door"
- Once completed, HERS inspectors will perform a "Duct Blaster" test in order to determine how air-tight the HVAC duct system is
